Nuclear Filters

Nuclear Filters Article

Questions:

1. Why does the US want to put vents in nuclear reactors and what is a disadvantage for them?

2. In your opinion, do you think that nuclear power plants should be used? (Take into consideration cost, safety, energy output, and environmental factors)

  1. 1) The U.S. wants to put vents in its nuclear reactors as a safety measure to ensure that there will not be a build up of gasses or material that would lead to an explosion such as those that have occurred fairly recently In Japan.

    2) I do think that nuclear power has more positive effects tan negatives. Though there can be accidents related to the plants, these accidents are infrequent and becoming more and more infrequent as safety measure improve. This power source is, all things considered, one of the most viable new options for green power, having one of the lowest costs and highest efficiency rates.

  2. The US wants to put vents in its nuclear reactors to help prevent failures.

I believe that nuclear plants should be used, although they are harmful to the environment, they are very efficient in producing energy, and may be necessary soon, if fossil fuels run out. Nuclear power is very efficient, and also not very expensicve making it one of the best options for alternate enrgy.

  3. 1. THE US wants to put vents in its nuclear reactors so that if a malfunction in the systems occurs, the radiation can be released so that there wouldn't be any build up to cause a larger explosion. However, there are some disadvantages of the these vents. The problems of doing this is that each vent costs 16 million dollars to install and with 8 plants over the US, Americans are lenient as to if they should go through with the changes. Another problem could be that since the Mark II reactors are slightly different then the Mark I, the vents could cause a lethal amount of radiation to be exposed to the public which is unwanted.

    2. Nuclear power plants should be used, but with precautions. Of course, nuclear plants are fairly efficient in producing energy, some countries even really on more then half of their energy from nuclear plants, but they are very dangerous to the public. If nuclear reactors can be made safer for people and the environment, then they would be the most innovative source of energy, but until that 100% safety can be reached, nuclear reactors should be used cautiously.

  4. The US puts vents in nuclear reactors so radioactive gas and hydrogen would not build up to the point of causing an explosion. However, these vents cause a dangerous amount of radiation to escape where the public can be effected by it. Also, switching over to filtered vents would be costly and the US must weigh the costs/benefits of putting them in. It's cheaper than having to clean up after a disaster, but would taking the risk save the plants money?

Although nuclear power plants pose as a threat to the environment, if we have smart placement (out of urban areas) and continue researching how to make it safer, nuclear power plants can be a net-gain, letting us utilize possibly our next main source of energy.

  5. 1. The US wants to install the vents so that gases don't build up inside, which could potentially avoid explosions. The negative effects of these vents are that the gasses released would contaminate the area around the reactor if too much is released. It also isn't cost effective when the changes that would have to be made to some of the plants are taken into account.

    2. I think that nuclear reactors may be used effectively if they are placed where there is little danger to the environment if there is a failure, or if the chance of a failure is eliminated altogether. Also, if the process is automated, to the point where the plant can be built and left to work on its own, with very little to no human interference, they would become even more of a viable option, because no lives would be at risk. Currently, however, there doesn't exist an isolated environment where failures pose no risk to the environment, and the process still requires humans, and I don't think we are at the point where it is a necessity to risk human lives the way they are today with nuclear power.

  6. 1- The United States want to put vents in nuclear reactors to avoid an explosion that could be caused by the oxygen and other gases contained. A disadvantage for them is that those gases being released in the atmosphere would be bad for the area's surroundings. It is also an expensive process.

2- In my opinion, nuclear power plants should be used, appropriately and in a way that does not affect surrounding populations or areas. It is expensive, and if people are not careful, explosions can occur, but with the right work, it should be useful.

  7. 1. The US wants to put vents in nuclear reactors as a precaution in case any gases build up and cause an explosion- it is a safety measure to avoid any sort of explosions that might occur. A disadvantage of this is that while the vents do avoid an explosion, they release these gases into the air, which is extremely bad for the environment around the plant and the living things within that environment. Also, these vents cost a lot of money to install so they would have a negative impact on the US financially.

    2. I think that although nuclear power plants have many downsides, they are very resourceful and should continue to be used. They are a great source of energy, so when we run out of fossil fuels to convert into energy, we can turn to nuclear power plants for that same energy. However, we should always keep in mind some precautions that should be used when using nuclear power plants- first of all, put the plant in an area that doesn't have much life to begin with (neither plants nor animals), and make sure that there are no towns nearby that could be affected by explosions or the release of hazardous chemicals. Nuclear power has served as an excellent resource for energy so that advantage outweighs all the other disadvantages and it should continue to be used.

  8. 1. The US wanted to put vents in nuclear reactors because they believed that their containment could be opened early in an accident to vent a puff of slightly radioactive gas and explosive hydrogen, therefore it prevents a buildup in pressure or explosions as an accident unfolds. A disadvantage of these vents is simply the cost. It is $16 million dollars per reactor and it was calculated that the probability of an accident in which a vent would be useful as very low. This does raise questions, even coming from the employees whether these vents are worth it.

I think that nuclear power plants should be used because even though they are not "cheap," it's still beneficial to society and nuclear power plants don't pollute the air to a significant amount right now. They don't produce any carbon dioxide and the small amount of waste that a nuclear plant produces is , obviously, carefully contained and safely stored. So far, I still think that safety should be considered, because anything could happen and the main safety concern is the possibility of an uncontrolled release of radioactive material, leading to contamination and consequent radiation exposure off-site.

  9. 1. The US wishes to put vents in the nuclear reactors in belief that it will be a safety precision, and control any gas build up, and future explosions. A draw back of this is that it is both costly and bad for the environment, by releasing gasses in to the air.

    2. I do believe that they should be used. This is because the produce a good amount of energy, which could be used when we run out of fossil fuels. Though they have many downsides, the upside is that they do not produce the green house gas of carbon-dioxide and all waste that is produced is carefully stored. Though when creating these plants, one must always take into consideration the environment and the effects this will have on it.

  10. 1. The U.S. wants to put vents in nuclear reactors as a safety precaution for any gases taht may build up which can cause an explosion. A disadvantage of having these vents they release the gases (that they're preventing from building up an exploding) into the air; these gases that they release are extremely bad for the environment around the plant and for the living things in the environment. Another disadvantage is that the vents cost a lot of money to install and would have a negative impact financially.

    2. I do think that we should have nuclear power plants because although they have downsides they are resourceful. The nuclear plants are a great source of energy; so when we run out of fossil fuels to to use as energy, we will be able to turn to nuclear power plants for the same energy. But, we should remember that some precautions need to be used when using nuclear power plants, like the location of the nuclear plant (one that has little animal and plant life). Another is to make sure that there are no towns that could be affected by explosions or the release of hazardous chemicals from the nuclear plants.
