Centralia

What is causing the uninhabitable conditions? Why were people forced to abandon their homes?

Why did workers quit trying to control the fire?

  1. 1. The fire that the townspeople lit in order to dispose of their trash accidentally spread to a coal vein, which caused a very large fire. After the people of the village thought they had put the fire out, they realized that they hadn't actually put it out so proceeded to do so again. And again, and again. No matter how many times they tried to put the fire out, it kept returning. The people were forced to abandon the small town and their houses because the monoxide level was becoming life-threatening.

    2. The workers quit trying to control the fire because in all their attempts, they tried EVERYTHING and nothing seemed to work. They flushed the mines with water and fly ash, built trenches in attempt to find where the fire started and ended so that they could control it, and they excavated the burning material. None of this was working so after their many attempts they decided it would be best to just evacuate the town. They predicted that the fire would continue to burn underground for another century and quite possibly spread to neighboring towns.

  2. 1. The town of Centralia burned all of its garbage in an abandoned coal mine. At one point in 1962, the burning trash caused an open vein of coal to ignite. Even with multiple efforts to put out the fire, the fire burned for decades underneath the city and resulted in high carbon monoxide levels. These high CO levels were inhabitable and caused the evacuation of people out of the city.

    2. The workers quit trying to put out the fire because it was difficult to put out since it was in a mine/cave system underneath the city. Every time they put out the fire, it always started up again because they couldn't find the actually source that it was coming from because it was deep in the mine. After decades of attempting to put out the fire, with little success, they instead decided to evacuate the city and monitor it from above ground. If the fire continues to burn at this pace it would spread over 100,000 acres and could threaten the nearby city of Ashland.

  3. 1) The uninhabitable conditions were caused due to a coal vein that caught fire from the burning of trash. The fire kept spreading, but there was also a very large threat of carbon monoxide poisoning, because the levels of the gas were reaching near fatal levels, and so residents were relocated, with the exception of a few stubborn who remained.

    2) Workers eventually abandoned their efforts to put out the fire because after two decades of combatting the fire, there was still no progress made, and it was determined that the effort and huge cost of attempting to mitigate the fire was ineffective, and therefore, further efforts would not only be futile, but also a waste of resources.

  4. The conditions were caused by a fire that was started by people burning trash tis fire then spread to a coal vien near the surface. People were then forced to evacuate because the burning coal caused levels of carbon monoxide that were deadly.
Workers stopped trying to put the fire out because they could not find the boundriesof the fire which was now underground. It is beleived that the fire will continue to burn for 100 years, affecting 3700 acres

  5. 1. The uninhabitable conditions were caused when the people of Centralia began to burn their trash in an abandoned strip mine. The burning trash eventually struck a coal vein, and ever since, the coal has been burning underground. People are forced to abandon their homes because deadly gases, such as carbon monoxide are being released.

    2. Workers quit trying to control the fire because it was spreading underground and workers couldn't find the boundaries of the entire fire. Also, the government delayed to take any action to save the village.

  6. 1. The uninhabitable conditions were cause by the burning of trash that started an underground fire that feeds on the coal veins that are underneath the ground. People were forced to leave because the fire was releasing the gasses to the people above ground, which was posing a health threat.
    2. The workers could not find a way to stop the fire, and eventually. it became too costly to continue trying to battle it.

  7. 1.Uninhabitable conditions were caused by the people of Centralia burning their trash;which eventually hit a coal vein which has been continually been burning sense. The continues burning has caused high carbon-dioxide levels, which eventually caused residents to evacuate, except for a few who still remained.

    2. Workers stopped attempting to control the fire because it was determined that it was costly;after two decades of fighting the fire and making no progress.

  8. 1. Trash was burnt in the abandoned strip mine and eventually caught fire because of the it was exposed to the coil vein near the surface. A few days later, the fire caught again even when it was thought to be extinguished and again and so it was doused. As it turns out, the coil was burning underground. There many effort to find the boundaries of the fire in order to put the fire out or at least contain it. As a result people were forced to leave their homes due to the high carbon monoxide levels and the fire, smoke, fumes and toxic gases that came up through the back yards, basements and streets ultimately ruined the town.

Why did workers quit trying to control the fire?
    2. The workers had quit trying to control the fire because no matter how hard they tried to find the boundaries of the fire, the coil continued to burn underground and it cost a lot of money.

  9. 1- What is causing the uninhabitable conditions is the trash that has been burnt by the people of Centralia, hitting coal veins underneath the ground. Ever since, coal has been burning, releasing too much CO2, as well as other gases and fumes. This is the reason why people were forced to leave their homes, because of the too high levels of gases in the air they breathed.

2- Workers quit trying to control the fire because it was impossible and too expensive, considering they were working on it for very long.

  10. 1. The trash that was burnt by the people of Centralia in an unabandoned coal mine which hit the coal veins underneath the ground. Ever since the fire, the coal has been burning and releasing CO2 and other gases and fumes into the air. The people were forced to leave their homes because of the high levels of gas in the air.

    2. The workers quit trying to control, because extinguishing the fire was becoming inefficently expensive and because they were making no progress in extinguishing it.
