What surprising phenomenon has happened to Chernobyl in the past decade and why is it surprising?
Why has the Exclusion Zone “paradoxically become a unique area for biodiversity”?

  1. 1. A couple decades ago, after the nuclear waste accident, the environment of Chernobyl became a wasteland with no signs of life. All the plants and animals were eliminated from the general area. Recently, scientists have found nature making its way back into the area, and that "roads and buildings are being swallowed up by thickets of trees and shrubs". The reason this is so surprising is because the area is still filled with radioactive material, so it was definitely not expected to become such a diverse area of land.

    2. It was expected that the radioactive area of land would not be able to accomodate any form of life for a century or so, so when the scientists observed that the land was in fact overflowing with trees and shrubs, it came as quite a surprise. For this reason it is "paradoxical" that the Exclusion Zone near Chernobyl became a unique area for biodiversity.

  2. 1. What is surprising is that after the disaster when the nuclear reactor blew up is that about a decade ago they saw wildlife slowly moving back into the area. They thought that Chernobyl and the exclusion zone would never be habitable by anyone or any wildlife but then they saw a decrease in radioactivity in some places and with that decrease wildlife slowly moved back onto the wasteland.

    2. First of all the fact that the radioactivity has gone down and almost completely dispersed is one reason why it has become a safe haven for animals but also there is no longer a presence of humans. The fact that there are no longer humans there to disturb the wildlife is a reason why they can flourish there.

  3. 1. The surprising phenomenon that has happened to Chernobyl in the past decade is increased plant and animal life. When the explosion occurred, scientists predicted that hundreds of years would have to pass so that radiation levels could minimize to sustain life. Now, there are plants and animals growing again in Chernobyl. This is surprising because of the high levels of radiation in the area. This is also surprising because this shows radiation levels could be falling faster than we would expect them to.

    2. The Exclusion Zone has “paradoxically become a unique area for biodiversity because of the radiation levels. One might assume that life would stop at Chernobyl, but now wildlife growth is evident and this is a paradox because of the radiation.

  4. The surprising phenomenon is the increase in both plant and animal life, it was suspected that hundreds of years would need to pass before life could be sustained. This is because after the explosion there was a lot of radiation left over. It is a surprise because there is still radiation in the area but its lowering at a high level then theorized, and animals and plants both are being sustained.

    2) It was expected that it would take around a centur to be able to sustain life. It came as more of a shock when scientist observed the area to find an abundance of plant life. This is because there is still radiation in the system and it is labeled as toxic

    because it goes against what one would think, and there is sustained plant life. this is why it is an exclusoiin zone

  6. 1. Wildlife is thriving in the contaminated area, even though it is still potentially lethal.
    2. It supposedly is not suitable for life, but wildlife is able to do better in these areas.

  7. 1. The surprising phenomenon that has occurred near Chernobyl is that despite the amounts of radioactive isotopes in the area, certain life has regrown and developed and has thrived more than it ever would have if humans were present.

    2. The Exclusion Zone is “paradoxically become a unique area for biodiversity” because one would think that in a harsh environment filled with radioactivity, life would not thrive; however, this isn't the case in Chernobyl. Life has actually grown and developed in the low-radiation areas and has thrived in the absence of human beings.

  9. 1) For a while, the area was devoid of life, and it was expected to remain this way. But more recently, it has been observed that life has become more prominent in the area once again.

    2) The Exclusive Zone was an area that had been predicted to be completely desolate for a very long time. However, in an ironic twist, this area has slowly been increasing in the amount of life that it supports. Life is left undisturbed, and is allowed to grow in ways that were not possible before due to the presence of humans in the area.

  10. 1- The surprising phenomenon that has occurred in Chernobyl in the past decade is that wildlife is slowly moving or coming back, regrowing populations of different species and ecosystems.

    2- The Exclusion Zone has become a unique area for biodiversity as it was to not have wildlife for at least a century and yet today, it is slowly coming back. Now animals and plants are once again a part of Chernobyl, even considering the high levels of radiation.
