Poisoning The Well

1. Is it, by definition, 'sustainable' to keep polluting aquifers? Why or why not?

2. What are the dangers of polluting the aquifers now and in 50 years?

  1. 1. No, it is not sustainable to allow companies to pollute aquifers. The definition of sustainable is meeting the needs of the current human population without compromising the needs of future generations. Aquifers supply half of the nations fresh drinking water. If we continue to allow companies to pollute them, the next generation will not have access to freshwater. In fact, Abraham Lustgarten (author) says that already, "western states [are] now stricken by drought and increasingly desperate for water". So, not only is the pollution of aquifers preventing future generations from meeting their needs for water, but is also starting to prevent the CURRENT generation from having access to freshwater.

    2. Like I said earlier, the pollution of aquifers is preventing the current generation from having access to freshwater. In 50 years, this problem will be significantly worse and a greater amount of people won't have access to fresh drinking water.

  2. 1. It is not sustainable to keep polluting aquifers because we decrease the amount of usable water for the future. We end up not being able to use the current water and future generations will have even less water than before. In addition to less water for the future, the aquifers will/are being polluted with chemicals harmful to humans, animals, and crops. At this point in time, aquifers are not sustainable because we use up more water than the amount that is refilled- by polluting aquifers, we make them even less sustainable.

    2. Polluting aquifers allows less water for the future generation but it also adds chemicals which harm humans, animals, and crops, in addition to the soil composition underground.

  3. 1. It isn't sustainable to pollute aquifers because it is hindering the future generations' ability to use this water which they may need to if anything happens to the waters we depend on today.

    2. These dangers are that the chemicals being dumped in the water will most likely cause harm to human health, and the exemptions are being practically given away to anyone who want to have one, as long as they are able to make up reasons that this water is no longer being used, and never will be. This may contaminate the waters we have now if the chemicals find a way into our sources of water, or we may need to use contaminated aquifers in the future, if the current water sources are in fact depleted.

  4. 1. No it isn't sustainable to pollute aquifers in any way or under any conditions because it decreases the amount of usable water and also renders the polluted aquifers from every housing water ever again. This is because the purposes for aquifers to be contaminated do not out-way the benefits of aquifers in the ways that they provide people with drinking water. Contamination of aquifers would then cause water shortages and pollution, specifically the depositing of harmful chemicals in soil. Currently, aquifers are being exploited for their resources and with contamination those resources would be exploited at a faster rate.

    2. The dangers of polluting aquifers now will effect generations in the future in an exponential fashion. As the population increases, aquifer levels will continue to decrease with more of them being contaminated. What that means is 50 years into the future, aquifers will no longer provide as much water for the world as they do currently and even less then 10 years ago.

  5. 1.No it isn't sustainable, because by polluting the aquifers it is lowing the amount of clean water that we do have on Earth, and seeing has how we have had the same amount of water on Earth for awhile; this could effect future generations access to clean water.

2.The dangers of this mainly are the chemicals. This can effect humans, in that of health, statures of life along with future generations will no longer have access to pure water

  6. it is not sustainable to keep polluting the water becasue when the water is polluted, there is less water available for use elsewhere. also, the polluted water can kill plants that are necessary to feed animals and humans

the chemicals that polltute the water are the largest problem, because what we eat/drink is greatly affected by the chemicals, which can result i death of plants and ppl and animals

  8. 1- It is by definition, not sustainable to keep polluting aquifers as it uses some of the clean drinking water that could be used. This could affect future generations and their water resources and needs.

2- The dangers of polluting the aquifers now and in 50 years are the chemicals used, which affect human health, as well as animal's and crops. It is also a risk to not have sustainable water resources for future generations to come.

  9. 1. No, because aquifers releasing toxic material into underground reservoirs therefore keeping polluting aquifers decreases the amount of usable water. To use polluting aquifers, it's not sustainable because it's compromising future generations' ability to meets its demands.

    2. The dangers of polluting the aquifers now and in 50 years is that it allows less water for the future generation and the additional chemicals that will most likely cause harm to human health. In addition, if this continues, there won't be enough water of good quality in the future, therefore it's not only hazardous to present day health, but there will be future consequences as well.

  10. 1) The use of aquifers is not sustainable, as polluting anything is not sustainable or desirable, but clearly, when there is a very limited supply of clean fresh water, destroying the purity and cleanliness of this resource is not at all sustainable.

    2) The polluting of aquifers is most damaging through the use and disposal of chemicals, whch cause concerns as to the pollution of not only drinking water for animals and humans alike, but also the poisoning of water that may harm plant growth.
