Phosphorus Footprint

Read this article

1. How does phosphorus end up in our meats and how can we reduce this number?

2. In your opinion, do you think our society would be able to function without phosphorus in meats and fertilizers?

  1. 1. Phosphorus is used in supplements for animal feed and for fertilizer to grow feed crops for animals that we eat. Individuals can reduce their phosphorus footprint by choosing to eat less meat. Meat producers could reduce the amount of phosphorus that is used in animal supplements and fertilizers.
    2. Phosphorus is used to increase meat and crop yields. Society can live without using phosphorus in meat production, but meat prices may go up as a result.

  2. 1. Phosphorous is used as fertilizer to grow crops which the animals eat. We can reduce this simply by reducing the amount of food we need that relies on phosphate, mainly meat products, and plants that use an excessive amount of fertilizer.
    2. We would be able to, but we would most likely have a shortage of meat, since we would need to grow them naturally, without extra nutrients.

  3. 1. The phosphorous ends up in our meat because it is in the fertilizer that grows the crops, which animals eat, which we eat. A way to reduce one's intake of phosphorous would be to eat less meat.

    2. In my opinion we would be able to survive without using phosphorous in our meats, but the prices of meat would increase, and it would also be unlikely, because the farmers would make more money by using phosphorous than by not using it.

  4. 1. Phosphorus ends up in our meat because it is present in the fertilizer used to grow the crops that the animals graze upon. We can reduce the amount of phosphorus intake by either (1) reducing the amount of meat we eat or (2) stop relying so heavily on phosphorus for the animal's food.

    2. I think that we would definitely be able to survive without phosphorus in our meats, but they wouldn't be as high quality meat. The phosphorus is present to provide the crops and then the animal meat with extra nutrients, so without those nutrients, the meat will still be edible but it won't necessarily taste good. The prices of meat would also go up, therefore meat would become more of a rarity at the dinner table.

  5. 1. Phosphorous is used in animal feeds and fertilizers. We can reduce the amount of phosphorous needed to produce our food by simply changing our diets. By doing so, we will ensure that less phosphorous is used in animal feeds and fertilizers, therefore, resulting in more phosphorous that could be used in other things.
    2. Personally, there are a lot of factors to the effect of having no phosphorous in our society. All animal feeds and fertilizers would have to be re-engineered with from nitrogen, an element of similar properties to phosphorous. If this is possible, then I believe that our society would be able to survive because phosphorous would simply be substituted for nitrogen. However, if this isn't possible, then our society most likely wouldn't be able to survive due to the decrease in nutrients from normally fed animals and unfertilized plants. A serious diet change would need to take place for us to live in a society without phosphorous.

  6. 1. Phosphorus ends up in our meats through when phosphorus is mined, is turned into suppements for animal feed and fertilizier to grow feed crops goes to the meat industry. We can reduce this by managing our food system in an equitable and sustainable way, and we need to look at many resources and priorities simultaneously.
    2. In your opinion, do you think our society would be able to function without phosphorus in meats and fertilizers?
    2. I my opinion, I think our society would not be able to function without phosphorus in meats and fertilizer because it's an essential nutrient for humans and plants, and much of the world's phosphate gets processed into phosphoric acid to make fertilizer that helps plants grow quickly. Mining more of it from deposits around the world has helped fuel the huge increase in global food production. Changing our diet may put a risk at our ability to sustain our growing population.

  7. 1- Phosphorus ends up in our meats through the fertilizers used to grow the craps animals feed on. We could reduce those numbers by not relying as much on meat but other aliments perhaps better for us.

2- In my opinion, I believe our society would be able to function without phosphorus in our meats and fertilizers. Of course, a lot of negative factors would be present, such as the fact that meat prices would undoubtedly rise.

  8. 1) Phosphorus is found in meats due to the fact that it is a main component of the fertilizer used to grow the plant fed to livestock. This problem is solved simply by eating less meat.
    2) If less fertilizer was used, this would likely result in less meat production, and probably a resulting rise in prices of meat.

  9. 1. Phosphorus is found in our meats through the use of fertilizers. These 2 things correlate because fertilizers are used in growing fed for livestock. That phosphorus is then stored with in the livestock and we eat it and that is how we get phosphorus in our meats.

    2. I think our society could function without phosphorus but our production in food would decrease because we rely so heavily on fertilizers in our foods.
